West Village NY Real Estate Guide
This is Jayson Sheftell of the New York Daily News on Bank Street in the West Village. Behind me, federal-style townhouses costing the neighborhood $3 million dollars in terrible shape, $5 million dollars in mediocre shape, and $10 to $12 million dollars in perfectly refurbished modern condition. Apartment prices in this neighborhood have recently skyrocketed. You’ve got $2800.00 studios, $3400.00 one-bedrooms, and $4500.00 two-bedrooms.
On the south side though, prices have decreased. You can now get a one-bedroom with a garden for $539,000.00 or a two-bedroom loft, 2000 square feet with river views for about $2.7 million. A two-bedroom would cost you about $750,000.00 to $950,000.00. Celebrities love this neighborhood. Liv Tyler lives here. Kate Hudson lives here. Gwyneth Paltrow used to live here. Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker lives here.
Schools here are terrific. The cobblestone streets are wonderful. But retail has gone sky high as well. You now have Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Brooks Brothers is coming. Those who are playing at antiques stores, laundromats, service places such as Corner Deli’s, things have definitely changed. Starbucks is now the old local bar. That’s the problem. People are moving out. The people who are staying though have kids, good jobs, settled lives. The musicians and artists are looking to Brooklyn and other places uptown to Hell’s Kitchen, even to Inglewood to find their new homes. Things have changed. There’s definitely a new kind of vibe in the neighborhood and it still persists to be one of the prettiest places in the city.
