What Causes Hives
Dr. Travis Stork: And now to cattle rancher and his favorite student who we hear doesn’t miss an episode of The Doctors.
Sheila: Hi, doctors. I’m Sheila. This is my dad, Brad. We’re from Norwich, Kansas. The last time I serve about a month before finals, I broke out on hives all over my legs and my arms. Is it possible to break out on hives from stress?
Dr. Lisa Masterson: That’s a great question from Sheila and actually I used to get hives before a test. So a really common, we think it’s actually related to histamine release which causes angioedema, that’s those welts and redness and itching that you can get which we call hives.
And we don’t really know why this happens but we think it’s related to some sort of interconnection between hormonal release and your immune system. So, it’s really common. Sometimes you can grow out of it, but stress can trigger hives.
Dr. Travis Stork: As can obviously allergic reactions, certain viral infections.
