What do you buy? There are hundreds of different items you can buy for a fish tank.
People walk into my store that had bought expensive equipment from someone else. But it was the wrong equipment for the tank which they want to create. Don’t let the salesman sell you anything you don’t know about. Do your own research first. Just by watching the reef aquarium DVD, you’re already once step ahead of the game. If you do take advice from a salesman, make sure they know what they’re talking about and not just trying to make a sales quota. Now, for the choices you will have to make.
Should you start with a glass or acrylic tank?
I prefer glass tanks over acrylic. The glasses that you’re observing your corals and fish through and you want it as clear as possible. It has been my experience that with acrylic tanks, they do scratch and discolor over a period of time. Important part of your filtration system is the sump. I prefer acrylic over glass because it is much easier to work with. It adds to your tank total volume. Acrylic is about twice the price of glass but it’s worth going for the extra buck for the acrylic because it's easier to work with.
The greater the amount of water you have circulating through your aquarium system, the more stable it becomes. The more water, the more time it takes for variables to change like temperature, pH, salinity, nitrates and so on. So, you want changes to happen slowly on your tank. The greater water volume helps achieved this. Make sure you get your bracing on custom tanks which reinforces the whole tank. You can see that your old bracing here on the top of the tank, overflows are well worth the extra price as they—a tape water flow. Another option you could want is the alarm glass on the panels that you see through. It adds to the cost but it gives you less discoloration than regular glass which has a slight green tint to it. I like a wood stand because I personally know the material. It is strong, inexpensive and very easy to work with. Some people buy or build metal stands that must be very well protected against corrosive salt water or they will rust.
