What Eye Fluids Say About Your Health
Dr. Travis Stork: Well they say the eyes are the windows to the soul but eye fluid can also tell you a lot about your health. We asked ophthalmologist Dr. Gregg Feinerman to explain.
Dr. Gregg Feinerman: The fluid in your eye can tell me a lot about your health. Here’s what you need to know. Tears are made of oil, water and mucus and they produce here in the lacrimal gland. They flow across your eye and drain away in that little dot in your lower eyelid. If you have dry eyes there are treatments beyond eyedrops. We can plug that little drain to raise your tear volume.
Dry eyes can also be a sign of bigger problems like autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and vitamin A deficiency.
Vitreous Humor is found on the back of your eye behind your lens. If you’ve ever seen black objects squiggly lines floating in front of your vision, it’s caused by breakdown in this fluid. Some of this breakdown is a normal part of aging but floaters can be a sign of retinal tears or diabetes. If in doubt get it checked out.
Eye fluids protect the eye and you should see your eye physician to get your eyes monitored annually.
Dr. Travis Stork: Thank you Dr. Gregg Feinerman, we appreciate those tips.
