Subhada Jagasia: Jacob had notice the decrease in his focus and concentration along with memory as we saw in this recent clip. This is a pretty common symptom that patients with hypothyroidism can experience.
Hypothyroidism is a very common thyroid disorder. This condition results in a lowering of thyroid hormone levels which can lead to a variety of symptoms. Symptoms of Hypothyroidism can be mild and they can also be very different, because of this, the can overlap with a whole different variety of disease states and making the diagnosis can prove to be quite challenging as we saw in the case of Jacob.
Symptoms include predominantly having a lot of fatigue, just not feeling like yourself, feeling like you have to nap in the middle of the afternoon, having weird gain, developing some constipation, dry skin, dry hair, or hair loss, feeling colder than most everybody, or reaches out of the ordinary for your baseline is also a frequent symptoms of interactive thyroid. However, subsequently most symptoms resolve with appropriate replacement therapy with thyroid hormone.
The commonest cause of Hypothyroidism is a condition called auto-immune thyroid disease. This is a state in which your own immune system produces antibodies that attack the thyroid gland thereby, affecting the way the thyroid makes thyroid hormone and gradually results in a lowering of thyroid hormone levels. So, oftentimes once we listen to the patient’s story and put all the symptoms together, the diagnosis can be made by performing a careful physical examination and following it upward a few simple blood tests.
So as we saw in Jacob’s case, once you start of thyroid hormone replacement, he was feeling much better, had lot of energy, was exercising regularly by lifting weights, playing soccer, playing Frisbee, and that is what we want with all our patients with hypothyroidism. It is important to take you medications regularly, but the goal of treatment is to really get every patient feeling back to normal as soon as possible.
