Male Speaker: ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Mary Beth Decey: ADHD is a disorder in which parts of the brain that are responsible for organizing and focusing are just not functioning at full capacity.
Male Speaker: There are 3 types of ADHD.
Mary Beth Decey: The hyperactive type of ADHD, you see a lot of movement, a lot of talking. Sometimes they fidget a lot that might be due to somebody who sees who always flicks the pen or shakes their leg.
The Impulsive part of ADHD is the person who, it’s almost the moment it’s in the brain, it’s already happened. So, you can have somebody who does something that they realize, you know, ten seconds later, oh, I shouldn’t have done that.
And then the inattentive type, which is often till recently has been the more difficult to diagnose, is the type that, it is almost like they are not tuned in. They appear to be paying attention, they appear to be looking at you, they tend to day dream a lot they intend to be distracted easily, but their distraction might not lead them to either an impulsive or a hyperactive response.
Male Speaker: Not every one who is hyperactive, inattentive, or impulsive has ADHD. It takes a properly trained professional to diagnose it. For icyou.com, I am Jack Rittenhouse
