Lyle Hurd: Dr. Gilbere, we have been talking about the difference between a naturopathic doctor and MD and what their particular charges are? You know an MD is somebody that someone will go to once a year or maybe twice a year for a physical of some sort.
Gloria Gilbere: Right.
Lyle Hurd: If you have catastrophic problem, they’ll go to MD. If you have a chronic problem, you’ll go and you’ll get a prescription.
Gloria Gilbere: Correct.
Lyle Hurd: How do people first of all learn about naturopathic doctors secondarily a naturopathic doctor be your primary care person if you know? And third, where do you see the whole area of this alternative option going relative to eventually being able to be remunerated for the patient?
Gloria Gilbere: For patient that’s very good question and it is something that I’m asked daily. What happens is that when you go—let me back up. Most of the people that come to someone like myself, a tradition naturopath come because they’ve been to anywhere from nine to 11 physicians already. You should see the stock of medication records, lab reports et cetera.
It’s important to recognize that it’s not, in my opinion, the fault of the doctors that they didn’t find anything. People will say, “I’m with the normal range and I know I’m not.” I’m still hurting, still have heart burn, still have allergies what it maybe.
But in within the scope of their practice and the timeframe that they’re allowed with our current medical system which we discussed many times before, they can’t go in to nutrition and environmental changes and detoxification and rejuvenation of the body. They just don’t have the time. They’re allowed anywhere from three to seven minutes depending on the health care program.
So you come to somebody like myself, yes you can use me as a primary care physician, most of my patients do. As I know, I can saw all over the world by the telephone as well besides at my clinic.
Lyle Hurd: Yes.
Gloria Gilbere: And the reason for that is that we deal with the causes. We deal with homeopathics, with herbal, with detoxification, with lifestyle changes, with environmental modifications. But if somebody needs to go to a regular MD, the best sign of a good naturopath is that you know when to refer them out.
Lyle Hurd: Great.
Gloria Gilbere: If somebody is trying the homeopathic and it calms down their symptoms because they’re having rapid heart beat for instance, and it doesn’t go away, you need to send him to a cardiologist. You don’t sit there and keep working with that because many times they need the prescription medications to balance them out temporarily and then the body can start repairing with the natural substances to take their place but not to begin with. Many times, there are serious conditions that I say, “Nope, this is beyond my scope. You need to go see somebody else for medical.”
Lyle Hurd: But to be able to have a naturopathic individual working with you to help you solve the problems that you may encounter from day-to-day, month-to-month, year-to-year and understand their general health profile, a naturopathic doctor works.
Gloria Gilbere: Absolutely and I’m on three generations now. That tells you how long have been in practice. I’m not taking care of the children of the children that I took care off.
Lyle Hurd: This is a good time to rapid up them. Thank you.
Gloria Gilbere: Yes it is.
