The new facts about liposuction
Wendy Lewis the author of America’s Cosmetic Doctors is here to explain what liposuction can and cannot do for you.
Wendy: For the past decade, liposuction is been the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide, and for very obvious reasons while dieting reduces your weight and size all over, liposuction removes particular fat cells and can help you change specific flaws in your figure. Liposuction is a safe and effective way to remove bulges from almost any area of the body.
The areas where women see the most immediate impact from liposuction are the abdomen, thighs, hips and knees. If you are very overweight, you may have to undergo these procedures and stages. The factor that limits what you can achieve with liposuction is your skin tone. The more elastic your skin, the better results you can get. If you have flabby skin due to pregnancy as aging or weight fluctuations, liposuction may not be right for you.
If you need excess skin removed, a tummy tuck body lift or other incisional surgery maybe recommended. When you undergo liposuction, tiny incisions are made in the targeted area and a wading solution is infused to provide anesthesia, reduced bleeding and improve fat extraction. The Surgeon will use hollow thin tube like instruments with holes at one end, called cannula to trap the fat.
This cannula are inserted under your skin, move in a back, and forth fashion within the fat pulling it a side while protecting your vessels and nerves, your fat is suctioned out for holes at the tip of the cannula. In most cases, surgery can be performed in your Surgeon’s office under a local anesthetic in one to three hours.
A compression garment is usually worn for several weeks after liposuction to reduce swelling and maximize skin contraction. However, most people can return to work or normal activities in as little as one week. Liposuction is considered a very safe procedure, and risks are usually related to the expertise of the surgeon and anesthesiologist. Specific risks include rare complications like pulmonary edema when fluid collects in the lungs or fat embolus where bit of fat travels into the blood stream.
For best results, liposuction surgery should be performed by a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologic surgeon. You should consult with two or more doctors to review all your options. Although liposuction can effectively reshape your contours and reduce fat deposits, it is not a substitute for healthy diet and exercise. If you keep your weight stable, results are permanent. If you gain weight after liposuction, it will tend to show up in the areas that where not suctioned. For more information, see a plastic surgeon in your area.
