Erik: Your parents have been married for forty years.
Randall: Over forty years. It’s an amazing thing.
Erik: It sure is. What have they taught you about building strong relationships?
Randall: It’s all based upon great communication. You can’t have a relationship that has lasted that long without great and open communication. That could be not just marriage but friendships, business relationships, on any level. I mean, there are friendships that I can’t even imagine forty years, let alone your life partner, your husband, your wife, what have you, so they have instilled upon me and I have yet witnessed through these many years that you must have that ability to sit down and work through everything and it’s based on great communication.
Erik: How has that applied to your life?
Randall: In my life without great communication many things are not possible. On a business level dealing with other clients and it creates an understanding, a clarity of what’s expected of you, what’s expected the person on the other side of the phone, on the other side of the e-mail. That ability to have an openness and an understanding is vital in success in business, success in relationships and marriages as we’ve noted and um, all the way around. I just think it’s imperative in this world.
Erik: That’s true. When you talk to your parents about their relationship, what questions do you ask them?
Randall: I ask them how they’ve done it on a day to day. Seeing and being with that same person for over forty years, what do you share now that you may not have shared prior in terms of, you know, common goals, things that you are looking for, that you are seeking. The little things that you may overlook in a relationship that are so vital to the everyday.
