Big Think is a global forum connecting people and ideas. It may be a cliché to say that knowledge is power, but that doesn’t make the statement any less true. We know that there are just 24 hours in a day, that you are bombarded with information, and that the bombardment will only escalate. We believe that not all information is equal. We believe that expertise is invaluable and should be shared. If you had a heart problem and could afford the counsel of the world’s leading cardiologists, you would seek their advice. If you owned a business and wanted to expand into China or Russia, you’d want to hear from people who had already done that. At Big Think, we put you in contact with the ideas of very smart people. We do not believe that experts have all the answers. On many subjects deep thinkers disagree. We do believe that we will all make better decisions in our personal and professional lives if our thinking is informed by expert opinion.

How about getting back to Einstein [who didn't believe in the tenants of modern quantum physics and string theory]? He played his violin as a means of reaching his own creativity, to make scientific discoveries. That(!!) is the relationship between science and art.

For those who don't want to watch the video here's a summary. Scientists should engage with designers for utilitarian reasons, to communicate with the public because they understand the natural world through metaphor. He basically advocates sci-fi as a way of expanding the mind. Things are complex and they cost a lot of investigate. 11 dimensions can't be comprehended. There's a possibility for "real understanding" of the "natural world" by using sci-fi metaphor and language (which is an overstatement but his point is well made).
