What To Do If Your Child Think He's Being Followed

Host: What should children do if they feel they feel they are being followed on foot or by car?

Nancy McBride: If they a child is on their way returning from school and they feel that somebody is following them either on foot or in a vehicle the best thing for the child to do is to get out of that situation quickly run as quickly as they can to the nearest safe place they can find whether it's a store or if they are close to school they can run into the school if they happen to be walking and the person is in a vehicle the best thing to do is turn around and go in the other direction because it will take time for the person to turn around in the vehicle and again get to the nearest safe place they can as quickly as possible.

That's why it's important that parent or guardians walk through out with their child and show them some of the landmarks they can seek out or the places they can go if they need assistance from somebody and that would be what we consider the low risk helping adults. For example if it's a store it would be the sales clerk who is in the store, if they are able to get to school and get away form the person it's the person in the office, it's their teacher, it's their guidance counselor we need to help kids understand that there are people they can always seek out if they are in trouble.
