What type of vitamin C is the best?
Sue Brennan: Some people have asked about what types of vitamin C are best. There’s some out
there that are, kind of, buffered with a calcium component. That can minimize
that stomach upset. Also, there’s Ester-C form, or there’s ones with rosehips. I
don’t know that you really get that much better absorption and they’re a little
more expensive than the normal tablets. The chewable tablets you want to watch.
There’s a fair amount of sugar in those, plus as you chew them, you’re releasing
that vitamin C, which is a mild acid; and so contact with the tooth enamel, that
might be a little acidic. That’s something to be considered of your dental health
with the chewable tablets. Of course, your source of vitamin C, you’re going to
get some from your food. Of course, food is your best source of any supplement
because you’re getting it in a complex food form with the other cofactors that it
works well with; like often with the vitamin C coming in your orange, you’re
getting the bioflavanoids and they work together. You’re green, leafy vegetables,
brightly colored fruits; anytime you start cutting up the vegetables, you will start
to lose the vitamin C content, and so sometimes one wonders, how much is really
in a juice that’s sat around awhile, even with the additive stabilizers and stuff. So,
the fresher, the better.
