Male1: What does glioma mean?
Male2: Glioma is a brain tumor of glial cells in the brain and glial cells are supportive cells and so there are different sub types. Astrocytoma is one type of glioma and there are other types such as oligodendroglioma or there are gangliogliomas and other types of glial tumors that occur in the brain. There are also some non-malignant types of gliomas such as optic gliomas which are the gliomas that occur in the nerves to the eyes that are common in certain types of patients, such patients with neurofibromatosis.
Male1: How do you treat that?
Male2: Gliomas are treated either sometimes with surgery, sometimes with radiation, sometimes with chemotherapy and it depends where they are located.
Male1: Are they curable?
Male2: Most of them are curable, not all of them. Optic gliomas for instance cannot be resected because; well they cannot be resected without sacrificing vision, so we choose not to. They can be radiated, they can be given chemotherapy, and most of those are very curable, but some of them are very difficult and they recur and recur and recur. They are usually not fatal, but they can cause a lot of problems. Other things like the high grade astrocytomas can be fatal because those ones do not respond to some other therapy.
