Dr. Vas Novelli: Well, Mumps is a difficult diagnosis to make but the main sign of Mumps is, a child who is unwell with the fever and who’s got enlarged protan, so, swelling in front of the ears, above the jaw bone on both sides of the face. Mumps is caused by a viral infection, it’s the viruses transmitted through the air, and it can be transmitted from person to person. The only way to prevent Mumps is through giving MMR.
Dr. David Brown: Well, as you know we have a Mumps vaccination program in this country and one important part of the program is to measure how effective it is by looking for Mumps cases in the community. These are very difficult to diagnose clinically by going to your GP and him recognizing clinical case of Mumps, so we need to confirm the case by doing laboratory tests.
Dr. Vas Novelli: The main complications for Mumps are Meningitis, a viral Meningitis; in other words, a child who presence with a headache, sore neck, maybe vomiting etcetera. It’s not as severe as a bacterial Meningitis, but it’s still a Meningitis. And in a proportion of patients, there maybe a very severe form of the Meningitis where there maybe some Coma in the patient, a proportion of patients also loose their hearing, there is neuro, a sensorineural loss, in other words, they become deaf.
