What are some basic rules of shot composition?

As far as composition goes and photographing well, there are several key points. One of the biggest things that people have a hard time with is getting close to their subjects. Over and over again, I would say, “Get closer.” People have a fear of being close. I guess it’s a natural fear. So get closer. If you need to buy a bigger lens to get closer, that’s the way to do it. In most of my critiques, that’s probably the biggest flaw. And the other thing that you can work on is what we call the rule of thirds. It’s not only applied to photography but it’s applied to everything that’s visual and print whether it’s paintings or web designs, anything. The rule of thirds essentially is four different points in the picture, in the corners. And in those four different points, that’s where your subject should remain. So everything shouldn’t be centered. It should be in one of those four points. In most cameras including your little point and shoots, it will have that grid display in there. So if you just watch that grid and put your subject in one of those four points, then you’ll have a great composed picture—a very well-composed picture.
