David Lupberger: Hi! I’m David Lupberger with servicemagic.com. And today, we’re going to talk about xeriscape, what is it, and what some of the misconceptions are. I’m with Kathy Bowen from A Boulder Gardener, a full service landscaping company. Kathy, tell me about xeriscape and what it really is.
Kathy Bowen: Well David, xeriscape gardens are gardens that are designed for low maintenance and low water use. But one thing that some misconception is that xeric gardens don’t contain a lot of color, well that’s just not true. You can plant irises, day lilies, and ornamental grasses which will get you through the entire season with lots of color and lots of interest.
David Lupberger: And the benefit of xeriscape is what?
Kathy Bowen: The benefit of xeriscape is that the plants are more durable. They require less water. And a lot of them are natives so they can handle temperature fluctuations depending on where you live.
David Lupberger: Okay all right. Can we see some examples?
Kathy Bowen: Sure. We are sitting in a xeric designed garden right now. And we have from midsummer, lavender which of course has that great, great foliage and purple blooms. Right here is Willy time which will bloom early spring, also a great ground cover. And beside me, are daylilies which of course can bloom midsummer around July and they have orange.
David Lupberger: Okay and what are the taller plantings back here?
Kathy Bowen: The taller platings back here are called the Russian sage and of course they have that great, great foliage like the lavender but they bloom in the fall which will then carry you into fall interest.
David Lupberger: Spring all the way to fall color each step of the way.
Kathy Bowen: Correct.
David Lupberger: So, it sounds like these plants are very easy to maintain. Are they also easy to install?
Kathy Bowen: They’re very easy to install, it just depends on how many you want to put in and how much you want to take care of.
David Lupberger: Good, thanks Kathy.
