Michelle: Hi! I'm Michelle from Fair Oaks, California and I was wondering what exactly is alternative medicine? Stacy Higgins: Michelle, I'm really glad that you asked that question, because we know that in this country, there are a lot more people who are using both alternative medicine as well as complementary medicine. Alternative medicine is the use of a therapy in place of what we conventionally use in medicine. So an example of this would be using a special diet for the treatment of cancer. Complementary medicine is the use of a therapy along with conventional medicine. So an example of that would be if you use prayer or meditation prior to surgery to help reduce anxiety. Most important is if you are using either complementary or alternative medicine is that you healthcare provider is aware of anything that you maybe using, because it may affect any conventional therapies that they are using.
