Michelle: Hi! I am Michelle from Fair Oaks, California, and I was wondering what exactly is alternative medicine?
Michael Wilkes: Michelle, that's a good question. Before we sort of answer what alternative medicine is, it's important to understand usual medicine, the medicine that you are most familiar with, we call conventional or Western medicine. It's what's taught in medical school.
Well, there are other parts of the world, in Asia, and even here in the United States, where we learn about medicines that is a little bit different than Western medicines; things you might have heard of like acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractor. For a long time Western medicine didn't even acknowledge these types of practices.
Well, times have changed, and many of these practices have been shown to have some evidence behind them and they actually work. Others, the evidence is still dubious. But many of us in conventional medicine are much more open to working with providers who provide acupuncture and provide herb treatments, etcetera.
So as you think about alternative medicine, you should definitely talk to your doctor. Let your doctor know that you are either considering using these, or have decided to use them so that your doctor can make sure that there really are no conflicts or interactions between what you are doing and what she or he has planned for you.
