Male1: Do you ever see people and they come to you and they think they have an injury and it seems to be swollen, you see, this is not an injury. This is really true arthritis. How would you know that it is a true arthritis from maybe some injury that they did not know they got it from?
Male2: Only with an x-ray.
Male1: What would you be looking for in an x-ray that would give you an indicator non-fracture that maybe early arthritis. What would you be looking for?
Male2: Juvenile arthritis is not as common as in adults. We see more adults with arthritis than children, but children do get arthritis that fall in the range of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic bloopers and so many other categories of arthritis. What we are basically looking for is the joint space. If the joint space is normal, you are in good shape. If the joint space is decreased or if you see osteoporosis around the joint.
Male1: What does osteoporosis mean?
Male2: Osteoporosis means the bone has become a little bit less dense than normal, in other words, the bone is washed out a little bit.
Male1: And that means you have?
Male2: That means you have inflammation in the joint.
Male1: So arthritis means inflammation of a joint, just having pain without inflammation is not arthritis, is that correct?
Male2: You can have pain without inflammation in the joint, or you can have pain without inflammation within the joint and so you have got to distinguish between the two.
Male1: So arthralgia is basically a non-inflammed joint to this discomfort, inflammation that is the swelling is usually called arthrities, does not always mean it is JRA or some other thing.
Male2: No. Arthritis is basically inflammation of the synovium of the joint--the lining of the joint. Arthralgia in essense usually means the joint is painful.
Male1: Thank you.
