Interviewer: Dr. King sometime in school, the kid sent home from the school because they see a kid had a rush and the kid has a slap face appearances some kind allergic, comes and goes. We think it is a thing called fifth disease.
First of all, why do they call it fifth disease?
Dr. King: Well traditionally, they are several types of infectious that has been described over time, many, many, many years ago and fifth disease is the one that became to recognize as the disease that cause by virus that called human parvovirus which is distinct from the virus that causes K9, parvovirus infections and those.
Interviewer: So a dog virus, if a dog has it, does it cause this disrupt?
Dr. King: No.
Interviewer: If you have it, you keep it to the dog.
Dr. King: The infection happens typically in elementary school children and by the time these children grow into adults and that half of them will have. When have been exposed to the virus and had an infection with the virus. But sometimes, the infection is what we called asymptomatic, that means it never had any indication that they have been expose to the virus that they have and infection. Some of them do develop what we called fifth disease, which after the infection about one or two weeks after the infection they may develop low grade fever, and he somewhat tired in about two weeks to three weeks after the infection and we have what to describe face appearance basically. She is red, and if somebody had slap the kid.
Interviewer: Now, is this disease contagious when you had the rash or it is really contagious before your rash breaks up.
Dr. King: That is before the rash. Actually the rash of ears around the time when the body develops any immune response, basically five of the infections, so during that process a rash is trigger and it appears first on the face and then subsequently on the rest of the body and may come and go, they fade and then come back. We have sometimes consulted of Alicia feelings to it, and sometimes have unusual distribution maybe difficult and require a consultation with someone that familiar with the unusual appearances of fifth disease.
Interviewer: It is also that probably gets a little worse if you are going to Rx online or one bath in terms to bring about more.
Dr. King: Basically any increase in this temperature has to bring her about any topics so fresh. Fifth disease is just one of those that will come out prominence or more obvious with increase skin temperature.
Interviewer: So kid that has the rash probably they go back to school. Is that correct?
Dr. King: Yes, because once the rash appears the period of continued or basically the period doing wish the virus can be transmitted from one person to the other is over.
Interviewer: Is it danger if the teacher or some of explosive kid is pregnant or is there any concern about that girl?
Dr. King: All they are doing for time when the infection is early before the appearance of the rash, someone who maybe immune compromise because of what we say HIV for example, may have an increase livelihood of transmitting the virus and the reason for that is that again the immune response is really the essential piece to bring about the rash. So if someone immune compromise, their immune system are not fighting the infection and therefore you do not see the rash. You only see it but not as prominent who is someone is healthy.
Interviewer: If a mother is pregnant and she is exposed to fifth disease, it there any concern for the pregnancy at all.
Dr. King: There is a small chance if the mother has never been exposed to the virus before in early of life, and it happens during the first half of the pregnancy that there is probably a small chance somewhere between 2% to 6% of the virus causing a problem in the fetus. And that problem essentially typically is anemia, occasionally there are maybe a loss of the baby and abortion. But the fifth disease was associated with parvovirus infection during pregnancy is anemia in the fetus which can be prominent.
Interviewer: Can I do a blood test to see if some of these are immune against this parvovirus?
Dr. King: Correct the blood test that is typically use looks for the antibody to fight the virus. Essentially you are looking for an indication that someone has been infected with the virus and immune system has responded to the virus and you can detect that parvovirus.
