Lars: Hi! My name is Lars. I'm from Medford, Massachusetts and I was wondering what gout is and can it be treated without medication?

Arya Shamie: Well, Lars gout is a form of an inflammatory arthritis characterized by sudden and sharp pain of the joints, especially of the big toe. It's caused by an elevation of uric acid in the blood stream which leads to deposit of crystals in the joints. Life style changes can help symptoms of gout. These include minimizing your alcohol consumption to less than two drinks a day and reducing your intake of proteins and fats. If these life style changes don't treat your symptoms I recommend contacting your doctor to discuss medical treatment options.
