What is Image Stabilization?

If you’re like me, you may have taken pictures in your life that are a little fuzzy. Most of the time, that fuzziness is caused by the camera shake, it’s because you can't hold the camera steady as you like to. So a tripod is much easier but if you’re holding it not steady, it’s really hard to get a really good shot. Fortunately with digital cameras today, they have 2 technologies that solved that. One is called optical stabilization and one is called digital stabilization. Essentially, they both do the same thing. They try to compensate for your shaking of the camera. If I had to choose between optical and digital, optical by far wins. It’s not even a contest here. Optical stabilization is not doing a digital enhancement of the picture. It actually is moving the lens or the sensor in compensation of what you’re doing moving your hand. That provides a nice steady shot which gives you a non blurry picture. Digital stabilization does the same thing instead of using digital circuitry inside the camera that’s actually moving the picture around the sensor and it does degrade the picture a little bit. Obviously, a combination of the two is also an interesting combination. But really what you really want is optical stabilization. It makes a huge difference when you’re taking a picture especially if you don’t have a tripod. So I recommend optical stabilization every time. Hope this was helpful.
