Dr. William McCarthy: Metabolic syndrome is really a constellation of findings that a medical care provider would discover upon examination of both physically and lab test. There are five components of the metabolic syndrome and what they do they equate to risk. People with a metabolic syndrome have an extremely high risk of having some form of a cardiovascular event, which possibly could be a heart attack or a stroke within the next ten years and these five findings include Systolic blood pressure elevation of 130 or greater. A fasting sugar of more than 100. A triglyceride which is component of blood fats are greater than a 150. Also an HDL which is a good cholesterol is too low, it can be too low. In males it would be under 40 in females under 50.
The final component is waistline. A male with a waistline above 40 or female with a waistline over 35 have a compound of the metabolic syndrome. So if person has any three of these five components, they have metabolic syndrome and are at extremely high risk for a cardiovascular event should be under physicians care.
