What is Osteoarthritis

Larry: Hi! I'm Larry from Tampa, Florida. What is osteoarthritis and how is it treated? John Sundy: Larry osteoarthritis refers to a kind of arthritis that we commonly refer to as degenerative arthritis or wear and tear arthritis. And what happens in this setting is that the cartilage that's around the joints begins to break down. We don't know all the causes that contribute to this but it's partly genetics and it can partly be just time and wear and tear are on the joint itself. As a result people can develop pain, swelling, and stiffness. It's actually the most common form of arthritis and in the country and up to 10 to 20 million people in the US may be affected by this. Our goals of treatment are to reduce pain and to improve function and we've a lot of good medical, non-medical and even surgical therapies for this condition.
