What is Peelu

Raena Morgan: Hello. I’m visiting with Matt Stigen, from Peelu Products, Limited. Tell us, what is Peelu? Mr. Matt Stigen: Stigen:Peelu is a plant fiber that we import from Pakistan. It’s a natural tree— Raena Morgan: It’s a tree? Mr. Matt Stigen: Right. They call it a tree, but it’s more like a shrub. It’s really only like four to six feet tall. The botanical name is Salvadora persica. A lot of people believe that you harvest the branches, but you actually harvest the root of this tree. And, as that root grows out, they harvest the ends annually. And you get something very similar to this. Raena Morgan: Looks like a common stick. Mr. Matt Stigen: It is, for the most part. Raena Morgan: For the most part. Mr. Matt Stigen: Well, it is common for the most part, but then there is a lot of uncommon characteristics with it. Raena Morgan: That’s what I’d like to hear about. Mr. Matt Stigen: Right. This plant has natural vitamin Cs, to help strengthen the gum, natural sulfurs that basically destroy the bacteria in the mouth so that the plaque cannot form. And then the most important point is that it has a natural chlorine. It’s not the chlorine that you’d find—that you’d wash your whites with—it’s a natural-occurring chlorine that helps whiten and brighten the teeth. Raena Morgan: So, it’s a mild form of chlorine. Mr. Matt Stigen: Very, very mild. Raena Morgan: But it does whiten the teeth. Mr. Matt Stigen: Exactly. Raena Morgan: So, how do you apply this root? Mr. Matt Stigen: Traditionally, for thousands of years, those in North Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia would cut off—or trim off the end, soak it in a water solution, and they would chew on it. Raena Morgan: Oh. Mr. Matt Stigen: The name Peelu is actually the toothbrush tree—is another name for it. Raena Morgan: It looks primitive, but it’s very natural and very effective.
