Speaker: SIDS. It seems that we see in lots and lots of cases SIDS and most people think it's because we have changed the position our kids sleep and all that. Is that true and what position do you recommend?
Speaker: Well, the recommended position for sleep is the Back To sleep position, that the American Academy of Pediatrics have been widely advocating for and since we have adopted that mode of putting babies to sleep, the incidence of SIDS has dropped dramatically.
Speaker: To explain things, the theory about CO2 being blown out and if breath in, they don't react is that the reason we see SIDS.
Speaker: We don't really know the specific cause for SIDS. There are probably multiple causes for SIDS. One of them, obviously may be the sleep position. There is theoretically the possibility that when the baby sleeps on his belly he re-breathes the CO2 that he exhales and by rising CO2, the brain becomes less sensitive to the lack of oxygen, a lower oxygen, when the baby is not breathing properly. Also by impeding chest motion by lying on the babies belly, he may be breathing less deeply and it may affect his oxygenation and CO2 accumulation. So in theory, it could be one of the reasons, but in all honesty, we do not know why babies do get SIDS. There are probably multiple causes. This particular cause probably gets abolished by the fact that if we put the baby to sleep on his back, this group of babies that used to die, we do not see anymore.
Speaker: So, can we recommend side position.
Speaker: No. Back To sleep on the back.
Speaker: Thank you very much.
