Darrick: So you like the extreme or watch more extreme than flying down the street at speeds of over 70 miles per hour. Hey, welcome watchmojo.com. I am your host Darrick and today Tim is going to teach us about the sport of street luge, what is street luge.
Tim Mann: Street luge is basically an oversized skateboard made and got six wheels out of four in front and two in back. We lay down on our feet first, we have gone about 120 kilometers an hour and our friends have gone 160 plus, it’s pretty fast and fun.
Darrick: Okay, can you tell me about the history of street luge, how did it start?
Tim Mann: Well, started out some people lying down on the skateboards, back when there are skateboards well about long and they would lie down on those and go on a hill because it get faster, and drop down everything who is basically a Lombard since then it has evolved.
Darrick: So the street lush is considered sport?
Tim Mann: Yes, its considered a gravity sport, anything that you are using gravity to propel you is considered a gravity sport.
Darrick: What makes this slide go so fast?
Tim Mann: Well, as I said weight has a big factor in the speed because more inertia we get more force they go as faster, that’s what I have said; a lot more resilient, it doesn’t flex which makes it lot more solid, the four wheels are front gives more jash in the turns, you can race with two wheels in the front, two wheels in back, some people race with four wheels in front and four in back, I choose this because its best for by way.
Darrick: Are there any like specific standards that every street luge will have to have in competition.
Tim Mann: Yeah, that’s maximum weight, I believe its 40 pounds. I have your sledge goes faster, the lighter sledge they turn better and they accelerate bit more.
Darrick: How exactly do you turn this thing?
Tim Mann: We know to slide and we turn.
Darrick: And the more you lean the more you turn?
Tim Mann: Exactly, it’s just like a skateboard.
Darrick: How do you stop this when you are going in 100 kilometers an hour?
Tim Mann: With the feet. As drop your feet down lift up on the slide and you stop pretty quick. We have entire tread we go to bottom of our shoes, really now I have rubbers, it’s slates on the bottom of my shoes and it stops really and hits out perfectly it doesn’t chatter.
Darrick: What about the rest of the equipment what else you wear to protect yourself or to help you go faster?
Tim Mann: We have a leather shoe, we tight our leather shoe as fast we go because aerodynamics plays a big factor. We would wear helmet and once again it’s fast which is more dynamic.
Darrick: Over the years you have probably seen the pretty nasty crashes and probably had a couple of yourself; so what’s the worst you have seen or experienced yourself out there in the competition.
Tim Mann: While the worse I have seen is actually when I got into the sport, we guys we go into a turn, one guy at lose and we get a lovely, hit the other guy and both drifted off in the one guys is they got trapped in the other guy’s board and snapped into pieces. Fashion just broke the knee and just under the knee hitting same leg.
Darrick: And so this is what got you into it?
Tim Mann: Yeah, me and my mom.
