What is Strep Throat

Gabby: Hi! My name is Gabby, I am from Moss Beach California and I have a question, what exactly is Strep throat.

Jess Dhaliwal: Thanks Gabby. Strep throat is an infection at the throat that's caused by specific bacteria called Streptococcus. It's usually seen in kids and teenagers and usually presents itself with a sour throat difficulty swallowing, fever, generally feeling pretty crummy. Doctors usually look in the back of your throat and they can see redness and pus. There is a simple test they can do in the office. If they do determine that you do have Strep throat well, then, it needs to be treated with antibiotics.

Now in some kids that get more than seven infections a year or if they are missing way too much school well then we usually recommend that they have their tonsils out, it's a surgery procedure that we call a Tonsillectomy.
