Rebecca Brayton: One of the biggest problems facing young hockey players is ice time. Hi! I am Rebecca Brayton and welcome to watchmojo.com and today we're seeing an alternative to ice that is not only inexpensive, but eco-friendly.
Georges Laraque: Well it's hard to play in ice time in every municipality. Sometime people have to practice since five in the morning to be able to skate. And also in the last ten-years hockey equipment has grown 100% markup. So a lot of people as much as they want to play hockey, they can't afford to buy full gear.
Perry Boskus: Cost is everything. It's so high to run an ice rink right now. Electricity is going up, it doesn't look it's going to go down. This, I can put a kit out here, charge them $2, I make a profit. You can't do that on ice rink.
Rebecca Brayton: Now, why don't you tell us more about this product.
Perry Boskus: That's called Super-Glide and this is the latest version. Well, it has oils in it, that constantly come up in the surface, which makes it glide very easily.
Rebecca Brayton: Would you say it's as effective as real ice?
Perry Boskus: It's a little bit slower, but anybody who plays on it will be a lot better. Skating on here for 15 minutes is like an hour on ice.
Georges Laraque: When you skate on this and you go and realize after it, it's an advantage, because it's like a training because obviously, this will bit more resistant in the ice. So way actually going the ice is fine, because there is no more resistance. So it's actually a great tool for training also.
Rebecca Brayton: Can figure skates is easy as well?
Perry Boskus: Yes, we have a lot of figure skaters training on it. Oksana Baiul the Olympic figure skating champion used it for a fashion show. We have Priscilla Hill right now who has the next Olympians.
Georges Laraque: Thing with figure skating is the hardest part for them is they need ice all day long. Eight hours a day that's their training, got to rent the ice, and then get a personal coach. Some people they have gotten this. You could do figure skating on this stuff, because you have no more ice problems anymore, you just have to worry about getting a coach.
Rebecca Brayton: I read that it's environmentally friendly, what about traditional ice is not environmentally friendly?
Perry Boskus: Well, you have the refrigeration units underneath where those compressor is running constantly. There was put a lot of gases, for instance in Serbia I have a distributor there. One ice rink takes up 7000 homes electricity, and that's how he made this out.
Rebecca Brayton: And what about maintenance?
Perry Boskus: Just keep it clean, rain washes it. I don't do anything to it. I don't like to touch it, I just keep it clean, that's all.
Georges Laraque: Municipality, all looking at this too because it's bought off at price of a real hockey rink and it's no maintenance. You just need a broom, and I was actually putting the rink together with kids yesterday and just to show how easy it is that you don't need a PhD to put this together. So it's awesome the fact that it's quite simple to do.
