Mike: Hi! I'm Mike from Massachusetts and I'm 39 years old. My question is that lately I have been hearing a high pitch ringing noise in my ear. I'm curious as what this could be?
Dr. Michael Valente: Michael, what you have is called is Tinnitus and some people call it Tinnitus, and what it is , is ringing in the ear and if we knew what it cause it, we would be in a wonderful shape but we really don't know what causes Tinnitus.
Typically, 90, 95, 96, 97% of the time, it means nothing, it kind of comes, it goes away. Sometimes it's in one ear, sometimes it's in both ears, sometimes it comes, sometimes it goes. In very, very rare cases, the presence of Tinnitus in one ear could be the sign of an acoustic tumor. So if you have Tinnitus in one ear, it would be a very, very good idea to have your hearing checked to rule out the possibility that you have an acoustic tumor but that's a very, very rare occasion.
