What is Tremolo Picking?
So okay, I am recording right now. This is going to be a recorded video all about Tremolo Picking and Tremolo strumming, what is tremolo, and how do you write it.
So in a piece of music, instead of maybe having a chord, you might have something that I want you to play like this. How do you write that? Well, it is crazy. Here is our piece of music. Let us go through this video here guys and say, “What if I want this note as a whole note? What if I want that note to be tremolo?” Well, the way that you would do tremolo in a piece of music, is that you would have designate it by a bunch of line.
So here, we are going to have this. We have one line, two lines, three lines, and you can keep going up. Four, five, and whatever you want. But let us go back down to one line then I just keep it simple. The amount of lines that you have here, they designate to you of how fast that you are going to play this tremolo. This line right here designates that you are playing tremolo. So then the question that I get asked is “Well, how do we know how fast we are suppose to play a three line tremolo as suppose to a one line tremolo?”
And the most translation that I have from people that I talked to is that they said that when you have a line above a piece of music telling you to play tremolo, is that it actually adds twice the beat to itself. So for example, if you put a line here, that might be telling you right here to play it as two half notes and so on and so forth. People say, “Well, if you have three that you are suppose to play at eight notes?” Well, not really. I mean a three lines tremolo is actually rather fast. So if I were to see something like this, a three line tremolo, instead of A chord, if I were to see a three line tremolo on A, I would be maybe playing like this.
If I were to see a one line tremolo – now, here is what matters though guys is that a one line tremolo, two line, three lines tremolo, it all means it all goes back to this and this quarter note, the tempo. This tempo right here is telling you 140 beats per minute. While a tremolo in 140 beats per minute is going to be a lot faster than or maybe even slower rather than a tremolo at 250 beats per minute. So that is just something like to think about but the quick answer that he has got kind of feeling out, maybe to the performer or to the drummer, or to the base player and then see how they are playing it. So let us go back to here guys and check this out.
So here is your tremolo. Now let us write down a piece of music and play it. So we got this tremolo that is left. Note that five lines — two, three, four, five and then we have our C right here. Let us make it a quarter note. By the way, this is important too, is that if you are going to be doing tremolos, a tremolo on a whole note because that is what a tremolo looks on a whole note is that you would actually just write it above – the note. But a tremolo on a quarter note. Let us do a quarter note here. The quarter note tremolo is actually going to be written on the steff. So let us do it a two lines tremolo here and maybe a five line tremolo here okay. So unless you guys all understand tremolos now. Notice how that when the note is lower than this B lines, see this line in the middle right there. This is A, here is B, well notice that when you are in the middle of the steff right here, it goes down. You have the option of either going up or down. It does not really matter. If I start going up half that beat, everything is going down. You have always wanted to go that way the same thing with the whole note. Now, the tremolo lines are going down. Because remember when I said if you are going down – here is the pick right here – is that if you are going down, when you are picking and then you want to come back up, and you are going down again, on the way back up, you might as well pick the str
