What is USB 3.0?

Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Dr. filefinder and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial and what is USB 3? USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. It’s a type of connection. It was first launch in 1996 with USB 1. USB 1 had a speed of 1.5 megabits per second. USB 2 went up to 480 megabit per second. USB 3 is going to be tagging along at approximately 5 gigabit per second. So substantially faster. It’s going to be called Super Speed USB. USB connections were meant, by default, to be backward compatible. So if you have USB 2, USB 3 cable will plug in and so on. With USB 3, you have extreme durability, compatibility. A USB 2 cable, for example, will plug into a USB 3 port. USB 3.0 is much anticipated and it should start appearing in devices as early as the third quarter of 2009 or early 2010. USB 3.0 will provide a substantial speed increase over USB 2 to almost a factor of 10. So that’s USB 3, and that all there is to it.
