Hi! This is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial and what is Flash Storage or Flash Memory?
Flash Memory is nonvolatile computer storage. It can be electrically erased and be programmed. Since Flash Memory is nonvolatile, there is no power needed to maintain the information. So, things like USB key chain drives use Flash Memory. Other things that use Flash Memory include your computers BIOS chip, Compact Flash that you find in some digital cameras, smart media also found in cameras, memory sticks also found in cameras, PCMCIA Type I and II memory cards because they’re often used in laptops, memory cards for video games, and so on. The capacity of Flash chips has doubles 19 times in 14 years which is amazing.
So now, we’re getting Flash Memory that is taking the place of hard drives because we can get enough information on them. They’re much lighter. They’re up to a hundred times faster reading data than a traditional hard drive. So, Flash Memory is memory that is nonvolatile which means it doesn’t need power and it’s safer in many respects because it has no moving parts. So, you don’t have to worry about the hard drive head moving back and forth over a drive. So, that’s Flash Memory and Flash Storage and that’s all there is to it.
