Doria: My name is Doria. I live in Brooklyn, New York, and I want to know how a PET scan works? Sara Hurvitz: A PET scan works by lighting up areas that are very metabolically active in the body. Cancer cells which are dividing fast are metabolically active. So if a patient has cancer in an area of the body, the PET scan will be positive in that region of the body. So it gives us metabolic information about the body. Sometimes we couple it with the CAT scan which gives us information about the structures of the body. And so we can have both the structural information about a tumor size, and the metabolic information about how metabolically active or how fast the cancer is dividing.
