What is a RAM Drive
Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome to your Butterscotch.com tutorial on what is a RAM disk. They're also called RAM drives. You can see here, it's mentioned on WikiPedia what a RAM drive is. It's a drive tat you create on your computer using software like the software here from FarStone to create a drive out of memory.
Now unlike virtual memory that creates simulated memory from disk space, this is creating disk space form memory. So a RAM drive or a RAM disk is a drive. It has a letter. The contents of the RAM drive disappear when you shut off your computer just like everything else that RAM does. There are some RAM drive software programs that will backup the information that’s in a RAM drive.
In the early days of computers, many techies used RAM drives as a place where they would put the program that they open the most because a RAM disk is so much faster than a hard drive. It has no limitations of hardware or disk heads or anything else.
So, when you load something from a RAM disk, it loads instantly. So the benefit of a Ram disk, it could be useful to put your internet cache in a RAM disk because then pages would load much faster. So a RAM disk or RAM drive is simply a disk that’s created out of your random access memory (RAM) and it's used for storage and other mains just like a regular disk drive. And that’s all there is to it.
