What about the Server Operating System itself, and you know I worked of course for Microsoft Shop here and you know I hate to say it but we know what 19.95% underlying the business, they have stalled here run on Windows and so I am going to talk about Windows server first. Well, Windows, the newest version is Windows Server 2008 which was recently released. Basically, it comes in different versions. There is a standard version. That is about a $1000.00, okay. And you define the role of the server. What is going to do? Is it going to have this colon active directory? Is it going to run the domain? That is the first thing you know, a domain is your network, so to speaking. The domain is going to have an active directory. That directory is going to be like a database of all your different policies that users can do their usernames, passwords all that sort of thing and it kind of keeps, you know the catalogue of all this on board that server. It can be a print server, where you share a printer to it and then it manages print jobs and all that sort of thing. It could be a file server. It could act as a web server. It -- so there is a lot of different roles that you pick and choose for the server operating system.
Now, think about Windows Servers is that the thousand dollar version up to 5 users can connect to that server anytime with the initial client access by this. How Microsoft does things. They either license the server software and then you have to pay for the users’ access that server as well. Then there is an enterprise version which is about $4000.00 and that allows up to 25 different users and there is a data center edition. It does not come with any client access licenses and it is a license on the number of process, physical processor is $3000.00 you have dual processors in $6000.00.
Skwell server I believe is licensed. You can like get it that licensed for processor. Not to be confused with a multi core chip. If you for example, – on processor with 4 cores, that would should only count as one processor. So understand that as well.
So there is standard, there is an enterprise of data center, there is a web server version of it as well. Then there is Small Business Server 2008 which comes in two versions, Standard version and a Premium edition. The only major difference between the two, well there is actually two. One is the price and the second is the edition. The Premium version also has a Standard version, SQL Server 2008 with it now. What is interesting is the licensing is the older version of Small Business Servers said, you have to install the version of SQL Server on the same machine that was running Small Business Server. And believe me if you have a busy shop and your are doing a lot of data intensive work and you are also trying to run exchange server at share point and all this other things, you can really, really, really track down a server. So, I think this is great news that now you can do that and actually install the SQL server on a different server box but still use the Small Business Server License. So that is good news.
There is a new features that comes with it. Of course it comes with remote web, workplace, outlook, over the web, share point, exchange server, SQL Sever but also now it going to be coming with the Microsoft fore front and as I understand it office live. So, all of this things are going to be included in the Small Business Server, that is one of the areas that I am focusing on is Microsoft Small Business Server. And it is really designed, it can handle up to 75 users as well. Probably you will get it in the shops with over about 40-50 people. You may want to consider going separate servers for Windows 2008 Server. Now Microsoft is ruling out something new, the kind of fill the gap between Small Business Server and the Regular Edition of Windows Server and is called Microsoft Essential Business Server and I think that I am not up to speed on that yet but I supposed to be more for a mid sized company rather than buying the enterprise up.
