The only time an episiotomy is NECESSARY is when there is stress on the fetus, such as fetal bradycardia (slow heart rate) or if there are non-reassuring fetal heart patterns with maternal contractions. Medic al studies have yet to determine if it is better to let the vaginal outlet tear or to perform an episiotomy. Find out what is best for YOU, not best (or easier or faster) for your physician.

You are perfectly within your rights to REFUSE an Episiotomy. And don't just take your doctor's word for it. It's unnecessary and it's not him who's going to be cut, is it. It's like the people who train people to be suicide bombers, you have to say to them, "OK, but you first"

What is an Episiotomy

Hi, everybody! I am Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. If you are planning on having a vaginal birth you may want to discuss the option of having an episiotomy with your doctor. An episiotomy is a procedure that helps prevent vaginal tissues from tearing as the baby leaves the vaginal opening. During the episiotomy, the doctor will make a small incision in the perineum, the area between the vagina and the anus, to give more space for the baby to pass through. After the delivery, the incision is then stitched up and will gradually heal. Although, this procedure has raised some concerns about its usefulness, it's sometimes necessary to speed up a delivery especially if the baby is distressed. So find out from your doctor today, if an episiotomy is right for you.
