What is an Ulcer

Aisha: My name is Aisha from Cerritos, California. I am 30 years old. I would like to know, what is an ulcer and what is it caused by and how can I get rid of?

David Ruben: Well Aisha, an ulcer is a destruction of the lining of the intestinal track. It can be in the stomach, the small intestine or the colon which is the large intestine. The destruction of the lining looks like a crater or a hole that can be in the stomach or those other parts of the body. The most common type of ulcer people have heard of is the stomach ulcer or a gastric ulcer and it is most commonly caused by type of bacteria called Helicobacter or by certain medications like ibuprofen or aspirin. So a treatment of ulcer is, is to first identify the cause and then either remove the bacteria or remove the medicine that might be causing it and then help the body heal by adding antitoxoid medications or other therapies.
