Host: Did you know 854 million people worldwide suffer from chronic malnutrition? This year a 100,000 are participating in the world vision 30 hour Famine and today we get to speak with Arie-Eve and Jeremy about this cause. What is the world vision 30 Hour Famine?
Jeremy: Really meaningful activity where young people gather together at their school for example or in any place and they fast for 30 hours, at the same time they have to raise money so to help world vision works all around the world for food program, water program and child soldier program. And the experience what kids all around the world have to experience everyday.
Arie-Eve: It started in 1971 in Calgary when a group of teenager saw a TV show about Africa. There are about kids suffering from hunger and they thought, “Wow, we can't sit down, look at that and do nothing.”
Host: And how do people participate?
Arie-Eve: It’s very simple. World vision provides everything to do the 30 Hour Famine. Kids can sign up online at worldvission.ca or famine.ca and they're going to receive a kit where everything is explained on how to participate in the famine.
Host: And is it safe not to eat for 30 hours?
Arie-Eve: A body can survive between five to seven days without any water during the famine, kids will drink juice, water they can even eat some rice if they don’t feel good.
Host: Why do you think more youths are getting more involved?
Arie-Eve: I think that youth realized that they can have an impact in the world so they want to do something, they sign up and do the famine.
Host: And can you tell us a little bit about the recent polls that were conducted for the world vision.
Arie-Eve: Youth are really concerned about peace around the world and also about hunger and about justice.
Host: And where is the money going?
Arie-Eve: We’re going to work in Uganda around Africa and Asia and India.
Host: And why do you think more youths are participating?
Jeremy: It’s so meaningful for the kids. They do it one year and they want to do more the next year you know.
