Maria: Hi! My name is Maria, I am from Haledon, New Jersey. I am in between stages 1 and 2 of breast cancer. I was wondering what would be the best treatment for my breast cancer, with the pros and cons of surgery versus radiation and/or chemotherapy? Julia Lawrence: Maria, for women with stage 1 and 2 breast cancer, they have the option of doing a mastectomy or a lumpectomy, meaning just removing the breast cancer and receiving radiation treatment for six weeks following. The decision about chemotherapy or other therapy that blocks estrogen is really based more on the characteristics of the cancer. For instance, how aggressive it appears, or if it's sensitive to estrogen, and also how healthy the woman is in other respects, and that's more an oncologist decision based on the individual.
