Many people ask me, they go to the store, and they see two TV sets, the same size, yet one is more expensive than the other. And they ask, why should I'll be paying for more expensive TV set; they both of the same size, what's the difference?
Well, there are actually a lot of differences, and all of these differences add up to the higher cost. And some of the things maybe important to you, some maybe not. So let me see if I can go over them. First one is resolution. 720 versus 1080. 1080 is the Full HD resolution. If you can afford it, go for the 1080. Of course, if you had a TV set under 32 inches, it probably doesn't matter, but anything in larger TV set, the 1080 makes a big difference.
Next is, if you're buying an LCD, think about the refresh rate. 60 is the standard, 120 is better, the higher refresh rate means that is motion pictures -- motion goes across the screen, there's less blur, higher number is better. Black levels, now this is a big one. The black levels are, the higher the number of the black levels the more expensive the TV set is, but it also gives you the much better picture. That because of that confidence, that punch in the picture.
Style, that's a biggy. That's a personal preference. Some of the sets now are very, very thin. You might want to have a very thin set, and you are going to pay a little bit more for that.
Now, there are other new feature is coming up. For example, new TV sets have the Internet capability, they are able to connect directly Internet. So for example, Panasonic has a thing called Viera Cast, where you can actually connect to your TV set directly the Internet, you can get information like YouTube or download movies from Amazon. That's a wonderful feature, but of course, there is a little bit of extra money for that.
So if you are looking at features, you might want to have the Viera Cast thing. Also, the Panasonic sets have this card slot in the front, where you can put an SD card in and automatically look at your pictures or your videos that might be on that card. And so look carefully to make sure this set will have AVCHD playback that will give you the full motion video.
Finally, connections. Some sets have connections on the front, and some of them have it on the back. The more connections, maybe the better. If you have somebody comes in with a game machine, you want to hook it up, you may like to have the extra connections. So all these things go into buying a TV set, and it's really a personal preference, but if I have to choose right now, absolutely go for the resolution. If you are above 32 inches, really try go for the 1080. Go for the highest contrast ratio, and think carefully about these new features. The Viera Cast on Panasonic, for example, really is going to open up a whole new world of watching television, you might want to consider that.
