Shalom! I am Rabbi Jonathan Ginsburg. The Sopranos, what has have to do with Judaism? Well, First of all, I know a lot people did not watch the sopranos because it really appeal the lowest common human denominator but it was watch by many millions and I was fascinated to see the amount of media coverage the last episode got.
Did not watch it, did watch the sopranos after the beginning but evidently the sopranos ending was not satisfied. In fact, one of the editorials in Chicago Tribune said; “Some viewers were offended by the cliff hanger that will never be resolve.” They figure that the guy named Chase, who must written and produce it, whiffed! Maybe he figure who could not satisfy everyone. Maybe even he could not decide or could not stand the part of those characters.
And the editorial was on this say; “Endings are hard beginning are easier but the end demand sometimes more it is demand pay off of epiphany if it the ending does not deliver it judge hardly no matter how brilliant the rest.” I love this line in the end in the end of the editorial. There is a lot of pressure, so if we learned anything of all in this sopranos, it is and it does not end.
Evidently, there was also blackout, where people thought that the cable had stop working. Which is very frustrating. The minute I went to read another article that said; “The sopranos are not the only great piece of literature. if you can called that a great piece of literature or popular piece of literature that left and brought ending with out a series.
Gone with the wind, had no major resolution. Red Butler packs of bags and leaves home angrily in informing wife Scarlet I do not gave a damn about what happen to her. So, there any question is she vow someday to win him back, does she?
Where great expectations get in road two separate endings, suggesting two varies two separate results or waiting Guido, were the tramps are waiting for Guido who never shows, were shall we go let us go.
They do not move to final stage direction. Major un result issue does life any meaning so whatsoever. Well there in lays the central issue do not expect to the answer from literature or from TV shows. That not the answer comes from, where the answer comes from, the answer from God through out study and holy literature that we get answers from.
So, what are the questions of Judaism. The questions are: How can I response to the vicissitudes of life? How can I best help prepare the world? In the wrestling with those questions are the wrestling of those questions are really the issue of God? Wrestling is the name for Israel and some we expect answers from TV or literature we not going to get it.
They only literature that we can get the answer from is the answer from God, who gave us the way of life through the Mitzvot, to the commandments and through the covenants of relationship describe for holiness is manifest through the system of commandments, and so, of course you are not going to get any answer from the sopranos. You are not going to get any answer from great expectations. You are not going to get from the meaning for Guido, waiting for Guido.
Is there meaning for life? Yes, there is a meaning. There is a meaning in a journey, not the ending. The meaning is how do we leave our life in the holiest way we can? How do we work best as partners with God, to make the world best we can? How do we not give succumb to citizens in the despair but continue to work to better our own life the life our community our people of the world?
Even if it feels like taking one steps forward and two steps back. We know we move a positive direction to help guide the best we can. The answer to the Divine Corrals, and so you disappointed that sopranos did not have the ending that was resolve because there is no resolution tell the messianic era comes. Until then, they have to do everything we can to repair the world to Comal am by accent give little (foreign language) deed of loving kindness.
