What to Do When You See Someone Drowning Dr. Travis Stork: 10% or drowning occurs within 25 yards of someone who could have helped. Unless someone comes to the rescue, someone drowning can only kick usually 20, possible 60 seconds before they drown and that’s not a lot of time. You got to think on your feet. Think quickly when it comes to drowning victims. Dr. Andrew Ordon: Help them get to dry land even with a pull with a branch. Throw them some clothes if you have to. Obviously if you have a life ring, that’s the best way to go. Once you have them on dry land, assess them just like we talked about before, are they breathing, do they have a pulse. Call 911 and start your CPR. Dr. Jim Sears: You know it doesn’t take a pool or a lake or a river to drown in. Kids can drown in as little as an inch and a half of water that’s three centimeters or so. It doesn’t take a lot of water to drown. Dr. Travis Stork: That’s why you got to need kids on observed.
