What to Do When You're on the Rebound

Megan: Hi, my name is Megan from Moss Beach, California. And I want to know what are some things to be careful of when on the rebound after a break up?

Mary Coussons: Megan, we’ve all experienced what it’s like to be on the rebound. They can be areally scary time. Well, the most important things is to make sure that you’re paying attention to yourself and that you’re taking care of yourself. A mistake that people tend to make when they’re on the rebound is to look outside themselves for help getting over the sadness and the lost that they feel because of a breakup. And so what that can mean is that you end up dating people or connecting with people in a way that really isn’t healthy and it doesn’t serve you and it doesn’t serve those people.

One of the best pieces of advice that I might be able to give you in terms of caring for yourself on the rebound is to spend some time just with yourself so that means spending some time with trusted friends perhaps not necessarily the opposite sex, spending some time together with your family, spending some time by yourself, perhaps traveling by yourself, going to a museum by yourself and reconnecting with who you are and what it is that you really need. So, by the time you get through the initial pain of the break up and the re bound, you’re really in a healthy place to start a new relationship with someone and have it be about that new person and not about what had been.
