Eric: Hi! I'm Eric from Los Angeles, California. And I was wondering if someone is having an anaphylactic reaction, and I don't have an EpiPen, is there anything I can do in addition to calling 911?
Stacy Higgins: So Eric, if you see someone starting to have an anaphylactic reaction or if they tell you that they're having an anaphylactic reaction, you're absolutely right.
The first thing you want to do is go ahead and call 911. And if they have a history of having allergic reactions, they may have an EpiPen as you mentioned. So ask them if they have one and if they do, go ahead and inject them in their thigh and try to massage the medication in, so it'll reach their blood stream.
If they do not have an EpiPen, what you want to go ahead and do is remain calm and try to keep them calm as well. You want them to lay down flat on their back and then elevate their feet above their head to try and keep blood flowing to their head. You want to cover them with a blanket to try and keep them warm. If they start to vomit, then have them turn on their side so that they don't choke on their vomit.
If you start to see the person lose consciousness, so they stop breathing or their heart stops, then you want to go ahead and start CPR. If before that, the person is still awake and able to swallow and you have an antihistamine like Benadryl, go ahead and have them swallow that which will help to reduce the symptoms of the allergy.
