There are certain tweaks that you can make to diet that just might help you out. Rhiannon meet up with the folks from Shop Smart Magazine for some healthy fast fix options for better skin.
Rhiannon Ally: That’s right Audra, Sue is going to show us all the things we need to add to our diet today for better looking skin. Hi Sue!
Sue Perry: Hi!
Rhiannon Ally: Now we know to say you are which you eat.
Sue Perry: Yes.
Rhiannon Ally: We’ve all heard that.
Sue Perry: That’s right.
Rhiannon Ally: Yes, that’s goes from more than just our waistlines, right?
Sue Perry: It does and for our general over a health we really can feed our skin to give it that glow and to keep it protective against sun damage, sun damage.
Rhiannon Ally: Yes all problems that we all faced.
Sue Perry: Wrinkles.
Rhiannon Ally: All does women have those issues.
Sue Perry: Absolutely. I mean there is no magic elixir but the idea is that there are some foods that actually do specifically help protect the skin.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay, let’s talk about some them.
Sue Perry: Yes, I brought some today.
Rhiannon Ally: For all of those we all know we should add more of that to our diet?
Sue Perry: Yes, we all need fruits and vegetables, but what these are, are this antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables. And they actually help protect and fight against wrinkles. They actually protect the collagen and the elastin in our skin.
Rhiannon Ally: So a simple orange can really—?
Sue Perry: A simple orange, some broccoli and the trick is the deeper the darker the food of the vegetable, the more antioxidants it’s going to have, the more wrinkle fighters. So I brought some kale, I brought some broccoli. I brought some bright oranges, and also sweet potatoes, deep red berries, you know anything.
Rhiannon Ally: All those kinds of thing?
Sue Perry: Yes.
Rhiannon Ally: And you even mention kale, you’re going to sink that in the macro and cheese for your husband.
Sue Perry: I am. There are ways to sneak all of these in. If you don’t like it, you can sneak it into stews and soups and I'm sneaking it to macaroni cheese.
Rhiannon Ally: That’s a great ideal.
Sue Perry: Yes.
Rhiannon Ally: So what about minerals?
Sue Perry: Minerals.
Rhiannon Ally: What that mean exactly?
Sue Perry: Minerals are -- well I brought some foods that have minerals and I mean so there is nothing strange about these foods the way we have kidney beans and we have some nuts and we have oat bran also oyster fish, shellfish, meat, poultry all have minerals in them. And what minerals do they actually are skin protectors and cellary generators. Yes.
Rhiannon Ally: So it’s going to help you skin re-grow?
Sue Perry: Yes it is. And it’s going to that and its also going to protect against that sagging and wrinkling. And even against sun damage. So these are really good things to have and they’re simple things that you probably already have on your shelf.
Rhiannon Ally: Yes. Easy and often fish as you mention for minerals.
Sue Perry: A shellfish, oysters are very good. We’re talking about specifically copper, zincs, selenium, those are the really skin minerals.
Rhiannon Ally: Again and they can also add, fish can also be good for those omega-3 as well right?
Sue Perry: Yes. We brought some fish along and that includes a sushi that you see here. Omega-3, fatty acids are really good to feed your skin. Because they actually bolster the protective barrier of the skin and they guard against inflammation and things that can change the texture of your skin. And that’s anything from blemishes to wrinkles.
Rhiannon Ally: Yes.
Sue Perry: So omega-3 is a really good and if you are not big fish eater, you can get in flax seed. You can get it in walnuts.
Rhiannon Ally: So you can actually take a pill instead if you don’t like.
Sue Perry: You can take a pill. You can take a fish oil pill that has omega-3, which is actually something that I do.
Rhiannon Ally: Well good to know.
Sue Perry: Yes.
Rhiannon Ally: She even does that. Okay, so this is one thing on the table that we actually need to be eating less of. But it’s one is my favorites.
Sue Perry: Yes. It is. I know we all like are sugary treats and our sugary drinks. But try to keep that in moderation, because sugar is really not fiendly to the skin and here’s why. When you have a sugary drink or a sugary treat, what it does is it rapidly spikes up the insulin in blood sugar in the body. And what that does is something that you really don’t see, but on the cellular level, what that’s doing is triggering kind of aging, premature aging in the body.
Rhiannon Ally: So that cup cake it’s going to make me age quicker.
Sue Perry: Yes, well you know in moderation. We don’t want to go crazy but here’s something really good to know about sweets. If you pick something deep dark chocolate that has antioxidants which are skin friendly.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay, so dark chocolate instead.
Sue Perry: Yes.
Rhiannon Ally: Got that, so let’s talk protein.
Sue Perry: Protein.
Rhiannon Ally: I never realized, I knew it’s good for the body, I didn’t know it’s good for the body I didn’t know it was good for the face.
Sue Perry: Yes it’s good for the face because it has amino acids and amino acids are the building box of skin repair and skin maintenance. So you really need to have little bit of protein in all of your meals. Some other foods we’ve already talked about, the fish has protein in it but were talking about eggs, low fat dairy products, poultry, lean meats are all very good for the skin.
Rhiannon Ally: Okay, thanks Sue and if don’t -- water you don’t -- isn’t really your thing, green tea another good drink. That’s a lot more help to do than some of those out there.
Sue Perry: Absolutely.
Rhiannon Ally: So thanks for sharing all these with us.
Sue Perry: You’re welcome.
Rhiannon Ally: We know now what we need to go shopping for at the grocery store. Right Audra?
Female: That’s right Rhiannon. Actually honestly, you reminded that I did forget to take green tea last weekend. Thank you very much, and if you want to get other great ideals for foods to feed your beautiful face, you can pick up Shop Smart Magazine or go to shopsmartmag.org
