Hi! I am here to talk to you about what to expect, when you are staying at a youth hostel. Well, youth hostels are all different, I got to be honest with you, they are different within each country.
Some of them are extremely nice and very safe and very private, you don't believe it or not, others are none of the above. And you really need to be careful about where you stay in a hostel. What you expect when you get there is a friendly host who will show you where your bed is, you may be in a room with quite a few other people.
You should have a clean towel, you should have access to the bathroom at all times, they are usually private. Hopefully, you are not going to put in the room with too many strangers who you don't know - their sleeping habits, if they snore and they are sleepwalkers. They are last night people or they are loud, you know, there is various.
You have to be pretty flexible when you stay at a hostel, but your safety or your belonging and stuffs, should not be compromised. Many times they have a safe, where you can lock up traveller's cheques and cash; I wouldn't keep a lot of cash on it at any time. But in general, I think youth hostels are great cost effective ways to visit major cities, and rural areas, there are hostels all over the place.
And you can meet some really, really cool people at hostels. I have met some very nice people who I am still in contact with, 25 years later, believe it or not. And lot of international travelers, who love to stay in hostels, so it's just nice, you get a different flavor, a different feeling, a different take on stuff. I would suggest -- so that is what to expect when checking into a hostel.
