Gary Vaynerchuk: Hello everybody. Again, this is Gary Vaynerchuk from Wine Library TV and you know what's very funny, the most obvious and always asked question I get is when you walk into a wine shop, my little old wine shop, when you walk into a wine shop, how can I tell if the wine is good. Can the label help me? And I'm going to answer the question for you very simply and obviously, no. I know that's not the answer you want to hear and people are devastated when I give them that answer like well, how did you do it? Well, I study and read about wine every single day in my life, it's 24x7/365, just like you know something about that you do all the time. But there is something you can learn and I'm going to give you biggest trick I can possibly give you about shopping for wine.
I know what you guys are all doing, I've been around this my whole life. You're either walking into shop and picking the one with the nice label or the one that appeals to you whether it's crazy or a little bit more classic or you're looking at the ratings on the shelf, right. It has nine points, oh it must be good. Half of times those things aren't even really true, they're not even the right ratings. You've got to watch those wine shops, you've got to be careful with them. It's all about relationship. Relationship with yourself and more importantly -- actually stuck it -- relationship with somebody in a wine shop or at restaurant. I recommend even you're paying more, which I hate, I am doing it with my discounted heart, to find somebody who you could build your palette and drinking habit with. What do I mean by that?
Finding somebody and telling them, “Hey, I'm Gary, I like wine, here are the fruits or vegetables or things l like to eat. Can you give me 12 wines based on the things that I eat or maybe you know something about a wine or two that you've had in the past that you like, can you give me 12 different wines that match up to this flavor?” You take that case home and hopefully over the course of a month or two like so my friend a day, you taste those wines and then you realize where your flavors are that you like and dislike, bring back that exact information I know pen or paper or to give you a little technology, bring your iPhone, text yourself, whatever works for you, but have the info of the things you like and you dislike. Bring them to that person and let them see it, you make them give you another case based on your selections that you will like and this time that person that's they do in 6 or 12 in the first time, should be much more towards the 9 and 10 for 12 and hopefully, by doing this process three times at least that's what I guaranteed when I used to working for my dad's shop, you give him three trips, three cases. It would take you a year or would take you a month, depending on how much wine you are drinking, you give me three shot of that, I will go 11 for 12.
Build a palette with somebody who knows something at a wine shop locally and I promise you, you'll start walking it towards and the best part is, let me give you the trick of the whole thing, after about that third or fourth case, you're going to know what you like and once you know, it's something like G.I. Joe thing, you know when you have to battle. So definitely go this route, you will never walk into a wine shop and know if a wine is good or bad, based on the label or something, some words or years, it's just not the way you go. See you next time.
