Video Cameras
What is the best video camera to use? It sounds like a simple enough question after all. You go to any electronic store and there is row after row of all these shiny cameras and it would seem that any one camera would be just as good as the next right. Unfortunately that is not the case so here is what you need to know.
First of all, all cameras that use hard drives or flash memory or the little many discs, those type of cameras compress the footage onto the media for those cameras and any time you compress video footage you lose quality. Now, this is most obvious in these types of cameras that shoot high definition and these types of cameras are going to be called AVCHD or AVC cameras and what is going to happen is you are going to expect to get this beautiful high definition video but instead, you are going to be somewhat disappointed in the quality that you get again because of this compression.
But by far, the biggest problem that these types of cameras the ones that you use hard drivers or flash memory cause is getting the footage off your camera onto your computer and into video editing software. Basically, if the camera you are using is not made by Sony or Canon, there is a very good chance that you are going to run into problems and headaches and the reason that Sony and Canon have the fewest amount of issues is because they are the most popular cameras and therefore, they are the most widely supported by video editing software.
But the bottom line in all of this is that if you want a highest quality video with the fewest amount of headaches, you want to stick with good old fashion cameras that use mini DV tapes. Now, these types of cameras are officially on the way out but as it stands, right now as I am recording this video, they still are the best bet as far as quality and the fewest amount of headaches.
Now, as far as the cameras I personally use. The camera being used to make this video right now is Canon GL2. It is a standard definition camera. If you want to go high definition, arguably, the best camera available right now is the Canon Vixia HV30. I personally own one and while it is not a perfect camera, it does do high definition very well. So, that is video cameras, what you should use and what you should stay away form. I am Dave Kaminski of Web Video University.
