When I'm 64 - Easy Beatles Acoustic Guitar Lesson

Hey rhythm strummers. Listen to this cool way to play “When I’m 64” by the Beatles. [Demonstration] I can only use 30 seconds of that song in this free lesson so I’m going to sing a little bit for later. But, let me show you some cool chord changes that happened in that song and how you can use them in lots of different songs. So here is what I want to show you about “When I’m 64”. No, it’s not the mouth trumpet. If you are into learning about the mouth trumpet, you’ll be able to [Demonstration]. You should come check out the Techniques Library at RhythmStrummer.Com because we got a lesson on that. But we’re doing guitar right now and it’s this progression that comes in this song. [Demonstration] Which comes in lots of different songs. [Demonstration] That’s a good one to know for lots of different songs. And especially, it tunes like other people that played rock and roll that sounded like a little bit like swing and progressions like this. Let me show you what I’m doing. First, I’m doing the F chord, and I’m just playing this small F right here. [Demonstration] Those are the notes that I’m playing. And then I’m playing the F minor chord by removing my middle finger. And C chord, and the A7 chord, D7 chord, G7 chord, and C chord again. That whole sequence are really common and it’s got a lot of what’s called the circle that fits in it. When people refer to that, you’d probably think they’re probably talking about something like that. So let’s try playing that one more time. [Demonstration] And the way I’m strumming this is I’m just playing a strum on each beat of 1, 2, 3, 4, strum, strum, strum… Real straight kind of rhythm which works great for swing tunes and for this song in particular. [Demonstration] Now, let’s add something to that. I’m going to give you a different chord in place of the F minor. There is this cool chord that you can play that’s kind of like an F minor but actually it uses fewer fingers. Here’s the F, here’s the F minor we had. I’m just going to take my ring finger off and just play these notes and this actually becomes an Fm6. but you don’t need to know that, you just need to be able to play. So what that sounds like. [Demonstration] I’m sure that if the Beatles have thought of that chord when they were writing the song, Paul would have thought of that. He probably would have used it, but he didn’t, we did. So let’s play that. [Demonstration] That’s great.
